During
his eight-month tenure, Tipu Munshi, who took
over as President of Bangladesh Garment
Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) on
November 16, 2005, wants to work with compliance
issues to make the country's apparel exporters
more competitive.
“Although most of the apparel manufacturers and
exporters are following the compliance issues
set by the national and international
organizations, the exporters sometimes face
problems with compliance issues”, he said during
an exclusive interview with the Cotton
Bangladesh recently.
Moreover, he said, a vested quarter often
disseminates erroneous information about the
compliance issues.
Munshi, who is the Managing Director of Sepal
Group, said the BGMEA set up a Compliance Cell
in 2003 to help the non-compliant garment units
and so far the cell has supported around 200
garment units to become compliant.
“However”, he continued, “the cell does not have
enough financial resources to assist the small
and medium garment units to be compliant”.
Therefore he urged the government to allocate a
special fund for the small and medium garment
factories.
On the issue of sick garment industries, which
is also a major issue on his agenda, he said:
"We are hopeful that the Ministry of Finance
will provide its decision about the sick garment
factories in the beginning of 2006," He also
informed that a proposal is with the ministry
which looks at ways for revival of the sick
garment units.
Commenting on the recently concluded sixth WTO
Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong, he sa id
that although according to the draft WTO
declaration the least developed countries,
including Bangladesh, will not get duty and
quota free market access for textile and
clothing products in the international markets;
BGMEA will continue its efforts to get the US
Trade Bill for duty and quota free market access
in the US market, passed by the US
administration. He also hoped that the
government of Bangladesh will make vigorous
effort in getting the bill passed.
He also affirmed that he will continue his
effort to get support from the government on
issues of relaxation of rules of origin, central
bonded warehouse facility, EU GSP facility and a
developed infrastructure facility for RMG.
The BGMEA President, praised the government for
re-opening the Benapole Land Port to import yarn
from India.
