The First International
Uzbek Cotton Fair was
held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan at the exhibition
center “Uzexpocenter” on October 10-11, 2005.
The fair was organized by the government of
Uzbekistan in association with Cotton Outlook, a
leading cotton publication based in Liverpool
serving the world cotton industry.
The main goal of the fair was to conclude new
contracts and develop long-term trade relations
with merchants and cotton end-users. Consumers
of Uzbek cotton got acquainted with its quality
standards, newest innovations, trade and
logistics. A large variety of Uzbekistan-grown
cotton was exhibited at the fair.
Uzbekistan ranks sixth among the cotton
producing countries and second in exports in the
world. The First International Uzbek Cotton Fair
attracted great attention from the world cotton
communities. Numerous companies, firms and
enterprises from Southeast Asia, CIS and Europe
attended the event. Besides, participants of the
fair had the opportunity to conclude long-term
contracts with Uzbek exporters.
Cotton production and cotton processing
industries traditionally take an important place
in Uzbekistan's economy. After gaining its
independence, Uzbekistan headed for radical
modernization in cotton industry under the
leadership of President Islam Karimov. Market
relations have changed the approach to cotton
growing, processing of cotton fiber and
production of various goods. Over the last few
years Uzbek scientists developed a number of
promising varieties of cotton, which are
distinguished not only by high yielding variety
but also the best fiber quality. Scientists also
contribute to the common course by developing
new and more efficient means of plant
protection. Textile processing units are now
using most modern equipments. New advanced
technologies are being introduced to enhance the
quality of cotton products and their
competitiveness in the word market.

Great importance is given to the development of
foreign economic relations, which is evident by
the growth of foreign investment in the cotton
sector. Domestic cotton producers continuously
make effort to establish relations with new
foreign partners who are interested in expanding
fruitful cooperation. In this aspect Uzbekistan
is regarded as a reliable economic partner.
Trade mechanisms are constantly elaborated,
including introduction of guaranteed supply
schemes and increase in the number of transport
corridors. While in the past Uzbekistan exported
its cotton to EU, but in recent years the
dynamics has changed significantly. Rapidly
developing textile industries in Bangladesh,
India, China, Pakistan and other Southeast Asian
countries created a great demand for Uzbek
Cotton. ¨
